Pontiac's fabulous for '56
The important Pontiac news in 1956 wasn’t styling, engineering or a 27 percent dip in production. All three took of these factors took a back seat to a change in corporate regime. On July 1, 1956, Semon E. “Bunkie” Knudsen became the youngest PMD general manager in history at age 43. The effect of this move would change the image of the company for the next 23 years. Knudsen’s policies would all but wipe out the pictures of Pontiac as an assembler of sedate sedans. The division would soon gain respect as a builder of top high-performance machinery.

Total model production reached 405,730 cars, the fourth highest run in divisional history behind 1955, 1950 and 1953 in order. On August 3, 1956, a Catalina bearing a Star Chief door script made history as the six millionth Pontiac ever built.
