Daihatsu previews the next-generation Copen with a sleek RWD concept promising greater driving fun
Бренд Daihatsu выпускает двухдверный компактный родстер Copen с 2002 года. За прошедшее время модель лишь единожды сменила генерацию: второе поколение дебютировало в 2014-м. Теперь производитель готовится свернуть выпуск двухдверки: согласно плану, последний экземпляр актуального Daihatsu Copen должен сойти с конвейера в конце лета 2026 года.

Однако есть вероятность, что у модели будет преемник: в рамках выставки Japan Mobility Show, которая сейчас проходит в Токио, марка презентовала концепт K-Open. Не исключено, что впоследствии он ляжет в основу двухдверки третьей генерации.

Daihatsu K-Open стал эволюцией концепта Vision Copen, который марка презентовала на выставке в Токио в 2023 году. Новый шоу-кар получил длинный капот с воздуховодом, короткие свесы, оформленную в ретро-стиле овальную светодиодную головную оптику и схожие по форме фонари, прямоугольный воздухозаборник в нижней части переднего бампера, а также вертикальные противотуманки по бокам, при этом на корме похожим образом оформлены светоотражатели. Ещё концепт снабдили прорезями на передних крыльях, обычными наружными зеркалами, утопленными дверными ручками и единственным патрубком выхлопной системы, который расположен по центру нижней части заднего бампера.

В салоне двухместного родстера можно увидеть круплое трёхспицевое рулевое колесо с красной «нулевой отметкой», а за ним на передней панели расположен изогнутый дисплей, исполняющий роль виртуального щитка приборов. Привычного тачскрина информационно-развлекательной системы нет, но есть панель с кнопками для управления рядом функций автомобиля. Дверные ручки с внутренней стороны заменены на тканевые петли.

Подробностей о «начинке» Daihatsu K-Open пока нет, но в компании рассказали, что под капотом у него расположен двигатель внутреннего сгорания, привод – задний (у актуальной двухдверки передний привод).

Daihatsu’s president described it as a vehicle born from pure engineering curiosity. Compact it may be, but the car’s layout — a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration — is remarkable for its scale. It’s the kind of technical accomplishment only a company like Daihatsu, with decades of experience in microcar packaging, could deliver.

Engineering Ingenuity in a Kei-Sized Package

Packaging a rear-wheel-drive system within a kei-sized chassis isn’t a trivial task. It means fitting a longitudinal engine, transmission, and prop shaft beneath the floor of a car barely larger than a city hatchback. Every millimeter matters. The engineering team had to lower the engine, redesign the pedal box, and reshape the transmission tunnel to ensure everything fit without compromising comfort or structure

The result, according to the presentation, is not just an academic exercise but a fully drivable prototype that celebrates Daihatsu’s approach to “small car intelligence” — a phrase often used internally to describe its emphasis on efficiency through innovation rather than brute force.

While specific drivetrain output figures remain undisclosed [Unverified], the project’s focus is clear: balance, agility, and joy at low speeds rather than straight-line performance.

Design Philosophy and Driving Spirit

The K-Open follows in the lineage of Japan’s compact roadsters, recalling cars like the Daihatsu Copen and Honda Beat. From the press images, the proportions are nearly ideal for a small rear-drive car — short wheelbase, low seating, and a centered cabin that hints at even weight distribution.

Inside, expect simplicity. The K-Open isn’t about tech screens or luxury trims; it’s about tactility and open-air connection. Daihatsu’s presentation emphasized this as part of a broader commitment to cars that “make people smile” — a phrase that’s less marketing than mission statement.

A Symbol of Daihatsu’s Core Identity

The K-Open’s reveal also came with an intriguing announcement: Akio Toyoda, Toyota Motor Corporation’s chairman, will serve as Daihatsu’s “master driver.” It’s a symbolic gesture that underscores Toyota’s renewed attention to its smallest subsidiary — and perhaps a hint at how seriously it takes this little convertible’s engineering challenge.
