MILA Blue combines lightweight construction, alternative drive and emotional design

MILA Blue is an innovative, natural-gas powered lightweight vehicle with a Car Mass Index of 49 = less than 49 g CO2/km. MILA Blue, the seventh concept vehicle in the MILA family, represents a new, intelligent, lightweight design approach. As a result of sophisticated interaction between an optimized vehicle architecture and the latest lightweight design concepts, as well as novel materials and joining technologies, MILA Blue achieves a weight savings of 300kg compared to typical current A-segment vehicles powered by CNG.

That MILA Blue is more than just a vehicle concept shows our project CULT, the drivable version regarding weight and CO2 reduction. For the project CULT, Magna Steyr gained the “Austrian State Award for Mobility 2013” as well as the Innovation Award from Autorevue magazine.

Intelligent Lightweight Design

MILA Blue’s weight-reduction achievement is based on a holistic lightweight engineering concept that rests on three pillars:

Functional integration:

Functional integration means providing parts with several functions in order to save on the final number of parts. For example, replacing plastic interior trim with structural parts suitable designed with laminable, visually attractive surfaces.

Material substitution:

Based on the principle “the right material in the right place”, a multi-material approach including aluminum, magnesium and composite materials was used to deliver cost-effective, innovative lightweight modules.

Downsizing:

Since the vehicle is considerably lighter, Magna Steyr pursued the goal of leveraging smaller and lighter components while at the same time maintaining function. For such a lightweight vehicle, for example, you can scale down the brakes or lower propulsion to a smaller capacity and reduce the number of cylinders while keeping the same performance.

Alternative Drive Concept

MILA Blue uses an alternative drive system, a compressed natural gas hybrid drive that achieves a carbon footprint of less than 49g CO2/km. “Less is more” of course also applies to our alternative powertrain concepts. If you use biogas – in other words, natural gas from renewable energy sources – instead of the usual fossil natural gas, the CO2 balance is reduced further to 36 g/km. The combustion engine is coupled with an automatic manual transmission and a belt-driven starter generator. Due to the vehicle’s comparatively light weight, crawling along in stop-and-go traffic and cruising up to 30km/h can be done electrically using power from the vehicle’s 12V-based electric motor and start-stop system.
