1987 Lincoln by Vignale (Ghia)

NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT - The Lincoln by Vignale, a two-passenger, world-class convertible concept car, will be displayed to North America at the Detroit, Chicago and New York automobile shows in 1987. Designed bu Ford Motor Company's North American Design Center and fabricated by Ford's Italian facility, Ghia SpA in Turin, Italy, the concept car provides a glimpse of what the high-performance, luxury touring car of the 1990's might be like. Ford designers have taken advantage of a multibeam headlight system to achieve a low front-end height and consequently, a low base of windshield height. The integrated front bumper with optimized air intake and wide driving lights allows a smooth transition from the front of the car to the sides. At the rear, the integrated bumper and sweeping taillights treatment emphasize the vehicle's overall width and help highlight the wide track and large tires.

In January 1987 Lincoln blasted its way back into the show car game with a tour de force sports roadster designed in America and built by the Italian coachbuilder, Vignale.

Initially displayed at the Detroit Auto Show, the Lincoln by Vignale, as it is officially known, was prepared in response to the anticipated introduction of the Pininifarina-designed Cadillac Allante. The Lincoln by Vignale was created to demonstrate Lincoln‘s ideas about a possible world-class luxury touring coupe for the 1990s and is reportedly being considered for eventual production. Projected power will be by means of a traditional Lincoln V-8 engine with all-wheel drive and four-wheel independent suspension. The Lincoln by Vignale is in its own way a pure show car: It is tremendously exciting and a very tangible look at possible future real world transportation.

Автомобиль создавался в качестве ответа на Джи Эмовский Cadillac Allante (дизайн Pininifarina) и Chrysler TC, разработанный Maserati. Как и у конкурентов, планировалось наладить европейскую сборку авто с последующей транспортировкой в США. Концепт базировался на платформе Ford Thunderbird десятого поколения, под капотом у авто скрывался традиционный для Америки V8, а вот привод предполагался не только классический задний, но и полный! Такого у конкурентов явно не было.

Машина получилась весьма красивой, разработанная в США и построенная в Италии кузовным ателье Ghia, в январе 1987 года этот проект был представлен на авто шоу в Детройте как двухместный родстер премиум класса - Lincoln by Vignale, затем автомобиль появлялся на ряде американских авто шоу, одновременно под брендами Форд и Линкольн. К сожалению этот автомобиль так и не стал серийным ввиду маркетологической не оправданности проекта.
