Pontiac Dream Car - Bonneville X-400 convertible.
For those of you not familiar with the X-400s, they were a series of Pontiac convertibles customized by GM Styling for show use. New models appeared in 1959, 1960, 1962, 1963, and 1964. The first two were Catalina-length Bonnevilles and the latter versions were Grand Prix convertibles-none of which were available from the factory.

The X-400s represented the outer limits of Pontiac-style, luxury, and performance, with supercharged Pontiac V-8s, custom interiors, and enough one-of-a-kind features to impress even the jaded enthusiasts of today. They boasted such high-tech goodies as a rain-sensing, automatically operating convertible top, driver-operated exhaust cutouts, and full gauges, right down to custom but stock-appearing 160-mph speedometers.

This car never made it to the show. It was destroyed on the salt flats at 212 mph it tryed to fly. The driver survived. They built another one with 1,500 pounds of lead added. The exaust was rerouted behind the rear tires to 4 beautifull tear drops coming right out of the rear quarters. Bob let me drive it one time. We were out on old 66 headed for St. Louis. He would not let me shift out of 3rd into 4th gear till I had it over 155 mph.My knees were shaking. He just laughed like hell and grabbed my leg and shoved it to the floor. That thing jumped to 185 and was headed to 190 when he let go.
Jimmy Gibson the man that mechaniced on it for those years put a lot of clutches in it. I have seen Bob win a bet a few times over that this car could not be power shifted into second gear. I have been in the back seat and it absolutly went airborn and started spinning out. Bob's x400 didnt have the crome strip on the bottom either would guess it was scrapped in the hurry rebuild. Bob said it had a bubble top for the boot to.
Anyone ever seen actual photos from the NY auto fair that year?
I bet its Bob's x400 in your photos. Just look for the 4 exaust holes in the rear quarter. Jim
I have a good idea what part of the country it got sold to but not much else.
