Citroën Ami 6, 1961-69
The Ami was Bertoni's final Citroën design. A distinctive feature was its reverse-slope back window, an element that had been used earlier by other brands, including Mercury.
Citroen Ami 6 may be one of the all-time ugliest production cars, but ugliness or beauty is in eye of the beholder, of course.
French believes that the car was elegant and tasteful 50 years ago. The production reached top in 1966, when Ami was the best-selling car in France. Ami 6 saloon and station wagon versions were sold a total of 1 039 384 copies in 1966.
Ami 6 Citroën’s designer was Flaminio Bertoni, who also were designer of 2CV’s.
Technically, the Ami 6 was based on the chassis of 2CV. Under hood there where famous air-cooled, twin-cylinder 602 cm3 engine, which initially produced 22 horsepower, and later 35 HP. A four-speed gear-box Ami 6 consumed 6 liters of fuel per 100 km and reached a top speed of 106 kilometers. So not very fast car.
Ami 6 50th anniversary was celebrated in Citroën factory in 8 June 2011.
