Subaru hinted it was tired of being too closely associated with farmers when it took the covers off the Alpha-Exiga concept in Tokyo in 1995. Taking a flat-six engine from the SVX coupé, the car pointed towards Subaru's growing interest in the sport utility market. 'Point' was the operative word though - this car's odd wedge shape ensured it remained a pipe dream.
Set to make their public debut at this week’s Tokyo show, this is a low slung, four wheel drive people carrier/estate, called the Alpha-Exiga.
Its design follows on from Subaru’s Streega show car, which appeared at the London Show. The Alpha-Exiga is bigger than the Impreza based Streega, and features a flat six engine.
According to a British Subaru spokesman, this is probably based on the SVX coupe. He suggested that a version of the Alpha-Exiga could reach production.
"The SVX was shown as a concept car to begin with. We’re trying to get away from our traditional image of the farmer’s friend, and move into the sport/utility market. It’s a case of watch this space," he said.
Subaru will also be showing a city car featuring a hybrid power system.
Called the Elcapa it can be driven either as a conventional petrol vehicle or an electric car.
