The Maserati 3500 GT debuted as a prototype in the 1957 Geneva Auto Show. It's beautiful, flowing lines were crafted in aluminum by Carrozzeria Touring.
3500 GT, 1957-1964

Ten years after the introduction of Maserati’s first road car, it was this very model that effectively achieved the marque’s transition from racing car to road car manufacturer. A total of 2,226 3500 GT coupés and convertibles were built between 1957 and 1964.

Two prototypes were exhibited side by side at the Geneva motor show on 20 March 1957, the coupés were penned by Touring and Allemano respectively. Touring’s design was preferred and made it to production with very few modifications. Its roomy four-seater body was built in Milan following Touring’s lightweight Superleggera method. The brand new straight six long stroke engine, with twin camshafts and twin-plug ignition, was the first Maserati engine designed specifically and exclusively for production vehicles, without racing in mind. With three twin-choke carburettors it developed 230 hp and provided plenty of torque. Top speed exceeded 210 kph (130 mph). ZF supplied the four-speed gearbox (five-speed from 1960 and three-speed-automatic on request), whilst other elements were sourced from the best suppliers of the day: Salisbury rear axle, Girling brakes, Alford & Adler suspension, Burman & Sons steering box, Borg & Beck clutch – and so on. Front disc brakes became available as an option from 1959 and Lucas direct injection followed two years later (3500 GTi).

The original concept for the car, devised by owner Adolfo Orsi and designer Giulio Alfieri, called for a fast GT that would be exciting to drive but also comfortable and practical for daily use. Maserati demonstrated exceptional attention to the customer and was a pioneer in making after-sales services a key marketing area. Many celebrity owners got behind the wheel of a 3500 GT, including Prince Rainier III of Monaco, the tenor Giuseppe di Stefano, actors Alberto Sordi, Tony Curtis, Stewart Granger, Rock Hudson and Anthony Quinn. Franco Cornacchia – a gentleman racing driver, who later became Maserati’s representative in Milan, regularly drove 3500 GTs between Milan and Modena on the Autostrada del Sole, setting a toll-to-toll record of 39 minutes over approximately 160 km.

3500 GTi, 1961-1964

Dubbed 3500 GTi (thus becoming the first GTI model ever!), the car now boasted a power output of 235 hp and a top speed of over 230 kph (144 mph). Maserati had started experimenting with its own fuel injection designs in 1954 under the guidance of Chief Engineer Giulio Alfieri. Many different systems were tested and several prototypes were built, providing Maserati with plenty of expertise in this specialist area. The first application of direct fuel injection (supplied by Bosch) in a Maserati had come on the 1955 250F Formula 1 car.

For road-going production, a partnership was formed with British supplier Lucas, and the 3500 GTi became the first Italian road car equipped with indirect petrol injection, whilst the mechanical system was also used to good effect on the second series 5000 GT. The increase in horsepower (15 bhp) was less significant than the increase in smoothness and driveability.

A carburettor version of the 3500 GT remained available for the more traditional members of Maserati’s clientele. Four-wheel disc brakes became fitted as standard on all 3500 GTs from 1962. There were also some subtle revisions to the styling that same year with less chrome and new taillights. The 3500 GT’s great success necessitated the creation, in the early 1960s, of a true assembly line with a raised ramp that allowed engineers to work both above and below the car simultaneously.

Looking at the 1961 sales brochures, there were some external differences between the carburettor version and the injected 3500 GT: the latter sported rectangular side indicators and the side window was divided with a fixed 3/4 piece, while the former adopted a thicker chrome surround to the front grille.

The 3500GT, introduced in 1957, replaced the A6G54 in production and over the following few years radically increased the production volumes of Maserati. Both the chassis, still tubular with independent front suspension and a live rear axle, and the engine, still a dohc in-line six, were new. The latter showed more difference to its predecessors, being a derivative of the 250F GP car engine with a displacement of 3485cc, two spark plugs per cylinder and a power output of 220bhp.

As usual the bodies were built by various coachbuilders, the majority being aluminium bodied coupes by Touring or steel bodied convertibles (with a reduced wheelbase) by Vignale (although Bertone, Allemano and Frua also contributed some examples). One-offs were built by Moretti, Boneschi and Touring. The car continued to be developed, in 1959 front disc brakes were introduced and shortly afterwards a five-speed gearbox became available. Fuel injection followed in 1961, the car becoming the 3500GTI and the engine increasing in power to 235bhp. Several small changes were also made at this time, such as a re-routed exhaust system, disc brakes all round, deletion of the front fog lights, revised indicators and rear lights etc.

In 1963 Vignale introduced a completely new 2+2 coupe bodystyle (steel with alloy bonnet and bootlid) on the shorter spider chassis, which was initially called the 3500GTIS but then became known as the Sebring. This had disc brakes on all four wheels and a five speed transmission. The engine gradually increased in size, first to 3.7 litres with 245bhp and then to 4.0 litres with 255bhp. In 1965 a minor facelift was carried out which involved redesigned front and rear lights plus some other detail design changes. Air conditioning and automatic transmission were added to the options list.

About 1,980 3500GT and 3500GTI cars were produced until 1964, plus 245 Spiders, whilst 601 Sebrings were built (348 series I and 243 series II) with production ending in 1969.
