HP-X (Honda Pininfarina Experimental)
Study, characterized by wedge shaped lines, of an extremely aerodynamic sport berlinetta. It is a research for a high performance sports car destined for assembly on a special version of the Honda V6 F2 engine.
HP-X STUDY
novelty
Within a collaboration which dates back to a few years ago - whose latest example is represented by the City Cabriolet which was displayed in Tokyo last July -, Honda asked Pininfarina to realize their own ideas for a high performance two-seater sports car fitted with a midengine power unit. This model foresees a special version of the V6 Honda Formula 2 1,996 cc engine. The bodywork, proposed for the Turin Motor Show as a three-dimensional model in real scale, is characterized by strongly innovative solutions resulting from the use of composite light materials (honeycomb panels, kevlar and carbon fibers), and a very extensive aerodynamic study as well.
The specific arrangement of mechanical units enabled to shape the floor so as to obtain the maximum of "ground effect", consistently with a normal road circulation.
In the front the headlamp and air intake style recalls Honda family feeling. Car profile is characterized by a sole camber joining front end, bonnet and roof, as well as a set of channels all along the front lid which originate a set of air outlets for engine recess "washing".
A typical feature of such a model is that windshield and roof are made in a single piece from transparent material. The rear end extends into a fairing which has two main functions, improving the car streamline at a specially critical area, and serving as an air brake directly controlled by the brake pedal, beyond a certain speed.
The rear end, of kamm tail type, typically shows upright exhaust manifolds and proper channels designed to obtain "ground effect".
The car interior offers both the pilot and passenger with an optimal comfort, thanks to an extensive ergonomic, functional and styling research.
The main characteristic, however, is to be found in the generous use of electronics as regards the set of instruments. A computer communicates the information (speed, fuel level, oil pressure, average fuel consumption, etc.) which are displayed on a monitor placed on the dashboard in a position easily read by the driver.
Another monitor, inside the instrument panel, may display the road map where the car has come to run. Special equipment, processing input signals, may determine and display the car position on the map in synchronism with the vehicle displacements.
The pilot can thus have at any moment his exact topographic position.
This display may also signal to the driver the presence of likely roadblocks by means of a special sonar. This device is specially useful for parking manoeuvres, specially when visibility is poor.
The whole system was developed and set up by Honda, which has named it: "electronic driver support system".

Max ground clearance: 1,110 mm
