An exotic, mid-engined successor to the AMX, known as the AMX/3, came fairly close to regular production in 1970. Seven prototypes were made, styled and engineered by AMC using the 390 cid AMC V-8, with bodies hand-built in Turin, Italy.

In 1970 American Motors made an splash with this all new mid-engined Dick Teague designed supercar. The car was derived from the front-engined AMX coupe, which was AMC’s mainstream sports car. To design the suspension and drivetrain, AMC hired Italian master designer Giotto Bizzarrini. Bizzarrini’s experience with his own mid-engined P538 made him one of the very few engineers with hands-on knowledge designing mid-engined supercars. Combining left over bits and some new AMC parts, Bizzarrini compiled a fully independent suspension. The chassis was a semi-monocoque backbone type, which, with the body welded on, proved to be very stiff. AMC added a 390 ci V8 engine, which was directly derived from the AMX coupe.

In mid-1970, THIS AMX/3 was first unveiled to the Roman press. The reception was enthusiastic. In fact, AMC ordered 24 more prototypes for testing purposes. Unfortunately, financial problems at AMC, along with stricter safety and emissions requirements, 86ed the project. In total, six examples of the AMX supercar were constructed.

This pushmobile AMX/3 was mine for many years and after developing three small kit car companies,in Colorado and Texas I decided to sell it. I advertised it in April 2007 where I lived but another AMC gentleman put it on the computer where it was viewed by numerous people over the next few days. Tom Dulaney, from southern Calif called and came up and purchased the car. He has done marvously in restoreing the body and had some copies made. He is making progress on recreating the most beautiful auto built by American Motors. Even though the lineage was short, five or six cars, it was a spectacular design by Richard Teaque and it is a wonderful tribute to him that the design is coming to light by Tom Dulaney today. I met Dick Teaque in the early eighties and was fortunate enough to drive the car, his son has possesion of today. The time I met with Mr. Teaque I was able to purchase an Otto Melero transmission which went with the car when I sold it. I would really like to see this auto reappear today. A lot of effort is going into this car, and Tom such berewarded for his efforts. Thanks, Jim

Jim,
Thanks for your comments Jim. I would like to think I am carrying on the work you started with the reproductions. This really is the best design that ever came out of AMC, beautiful design and the only mid-engine configuration. If you are interested in the registry of the 6 steel Italian built cars or progress on the reproductions, please visit www.amx390.com
Thanks,
Tom Dulaney
P.S. I does look like the Mach 5 from Speed Racer in the front.
